The Beethoven Anniversary Society is responsible for dispensing to qualified project partners the funds provided for the Jubilee programme by the public authorities. It also initiates and organises its own projects which contribute to the image of the Jubilee Year. Projects not supported by grant money may be registered as contributions to the side programme.
The fourth round of grant applications is already closed. From the 15th of August 2019, applications may be submitted here for the fifth and last round, which ends on 30th of September 2019.
Ludwig van Beethoven was born in Bonn in 1770. The Beethoven Anniversary Society has been commissioned by the Federal Republic of Germany, the State of North Rhine-Westphalia, the Rhine-Sieg District and the City of Bonn to coordinate and organise the Jubilee programme for the 250th anniversary of his birth, to be held from December 2019 to December 2020 with an emphasis on Bonn as the city of Beethoven. It is responsible for dispensing to qualified project partners the funds provided by the public authorities. It also initiates and organises its own projects which contribute to the image of the international Jubilee Year.
Applications will be accepted from non-profit organisations (e.g. foundations or associations) and legal entities headquartered in Germany.
The Beethoven Anniversary Society promotes cultural projects that take place in North Rhine-Westphalia, with an emphasis on projects in Bonn and the Rhine-Sieg District. It can also promote projects that relate to this region in their contents. Please contact us if you are planning a Beethoven project outside North Rhine-Westphalia. We are always interested in synergies and cooperations and may be able to include your project in our overall publicity.
Any project eligible for subsidies must, of course, relate to Ludwig van Beethoven. Projects should be orientated on the five main themes set down for the Jubilee programme:
B Beethoven as a Bonn cosmopolitan
T Beethoven as a Composer
H Beethoven as a Humanist
V Beethoven as a Visionary
N Beethoven as Nature lover
Further information can be found in our funding criteria.
Your project should satisfy at lease three of the following criteria:
The minimum subsidy is 5,000 €. Combinations of several small-scale projects in a single application (cluster) are permitted, though it is important that one person be cited as a contact for the entire cluster and bear the administrative responsibility. As a rule, projects can be subsidised up to 75 percent of the total costs. Creative projects from the private sector, cultural outreach projects and amateur music projects can be subsidised up to 90 percent of subsidisable expenses. There is no binding upper limit for the subsidy, though obviously the Anniversary Society does not have unlimited funds at its disposal and there must be especially convincing arguments for large subsidies.
Subsidised projects must take place during the Jubilee Year between December 2019 and December 2020. Preliminary costs connected with the implementation of the project can be subsidised in advance. However, they must have been itemised in the application and received approval.
No. Projects that have already begun or are already completed cannot be subsidised. This means that no service and delivery contracts are permitted at this point in time. Any necessary advance planning is permitted, however, and is not considered the beginning of the project.
Grant applications are approved or rejected by the Anniversary Society in conjunction with its board of supervisors. For subsidies up to 10,000 € the Beethoven Anniversary Society makes the decision by itself. For subsidies above that amount, the Society makes its decision on the recommendation of a board of artistic advisers.
Applications are submitted exclusively via this website. Here you will also find further information and contacts. Five rounds of subsidies are planned from 15 July 2017 till 30 September 2017, 15 January 2018 till 31 March 2018, 15 July 2018 till 30 September 2018, 15 January 2019 till 31 March 2019 and 15 August 2019 till 30 September 2019. Allow yourself sufficient time to submit your application and contact us in case you have any questions.
When we subsidise a project, the BTHVN2020 Logo and the logos of the funding bodies must be displayed on the welcome page of the project’s website and on all relevant printed material. Further information can be found in the funding guidelines.
If your application is rejected, the decision of the Anniversary Society is final. You have the right to submit a modified application in another subsidation round. If your project is to be carried out without financial support, it can still be included in the Society’s publicity activities. Please contact us if this is the case.
