77Beethoven - premiere
The bo complex dance company collaborates with the composer Marcus Schinkel and visual and video artist Lieve Vanderschaeve to create a multimedia dance piece with 77BEETHOVEN for the 2020 Beethoven Anniversary Year. The piece features live music surrounding the content of the “Golden Record” that was recorded and sent into space on Voyager 1 in 1977 with music by Beethoven and a message to any extraterrestrial forms of life on other planets. What happens if the record is found by beings of another civilization on the outer edge of the solar system? The dance piece and the composition were composed according to the sonata form. The video, using the style of 3D video mapping, supports the scenes, and allows us to create a state of limbo and transport ourselves to cosmic and real worlds. By using this technique, we come closer to Beethoven’s philosophy, which was to break the boundaries of genres and dare to create something of his own. The piece is subdivided into three "chapters", which, in addition to the scenario where an unknown civilization is influenced by the “Golden Record”, also focus on the life of Beethoven himself: order, early successes, the road to Vienna; chaos, the onset of deafness, the turning of his back on the people and ultimately; a new order, the acceptance of his situation and the creation of entirely new works. Six dancers are on stage with three musicians, covering the spectrum from classical dance to contemporary dance, and all the way to modern day acrobatic hip hop. The various dance techniques merge into one another and a very own language of movement emerges. The compositions that were created especially for 77Beethoven use phrases from Beethoven compositions on the two pieces, Symphony No. 5, First Movement and String Quartet No. 13 in B flat, Opus 130, Cavatina, that were on the “Golden Record” sent with the Voyager spacecraft to the outer reaches of the solar system.
