"A Musical Academy": That was the sort of slogan used to advertise concerts during Beethoven's time. Unlike today, the programmes were often colourful blends of very diverse works and line ups, and often also extremely long. Beethoven's Septet in E flat major, which is hardly feasible for smaller chamber music series, is combined here with a movement from the 2nd String Quartet by the Polish composer H. M Gorecki. The title of this work, "Quasi una fantasia", from 1991 refers to Beethoven's Piano Sonatas, Op. 27. Beethoven's 16 string quartets play a prominent role in his oeuvre; confronting his septet with a contemporary string quartet score is an obvious choice. Osvaldo Golijov's composition "The Dreams and Prayers of Isaac the Blind" for clarinet and string quartet widens the spectrum beyond classical chamber music to world music. The Argentine composer of Eastern European Jewish descent said of his play: "The prelude sounds like an accordion, the second movement sounds like a klezmer group and the third like a shepherd's magic flute."
