01.01.2020 to 17.12.2020 | Side programme

The City of Freiburg is home to an almost unique variety of orchestras, by students for students. There is at least one suitable orchestra for every level of skill and desire. On 17 December 2020 Beethoven’s 250th birthday will be celebrated and the year will also represent the 900th anniversary of the City of Freiburg’s founding – cause for a double celebration. Why not form a ring of Ludwig van Beethoven’s nine symphonies with eight of the best student symphony orchestras?

The first eight symphonies will be performed by the eight selected student symphony orchestras as end-of-semester concerts and the 9th Symphony will be performed by all of the orchestras together at the city’s concert hall, the Konzerthaus. All of the other student orchestras, who have not participated, will be invited to attend the final concert on 17 December 2020. As the 9th Symphony will be performed by an orchestra with a specific composition, not all the members of the orchestras will be able to play instruments; however, they will perform in a project choir, which will cooperate with an existing student choir of the city, in the final movement.
