The central Anniversary Year exhibition traces the key stations of Beethoven’s life against the backdrop of historical events and links them to his musical oeuvre.

The Bundeskunsthalle (Art and Exhibition Hall of the Federal Republic of Germany) will present “Beethoven – Welt.Bürger.Musik” (Beethoven – World.Citizen.Music) as the central exhibition of the BTHVN2020 Anniversary Year. The major cultural-historical exhibition has been developed and presented in cooperation with the Beethoven House (Beethoven-Haus Bonn) and will provide interesting insights to the life, work and impact of the world-famous composer until 26 April 2020 in the Bundeskunsthalle. It will also question the myths and clichés that have been cultivated surrounding his person over the past 200 years. About 250 artefacts, including countless original exhibits from the collections of the Beethoven-Haus, as well as valuable loaned items from German and international collections, will paint a multifaceted picture of the artist and man Beethoven in front of a vivid panorama of time. The exhibition sheds light not only on Beethoven’s oeuvre within a music history and biographical context, but also on the political and historical background of the late 18th and early 19th centuries. The global significance of Beethoven and history of his influence up to the present day are as much a focus as the history of ideas and cultural-historical context of a society undergoing fundamental change. The composer’s working methods, Beethoven’s state of health, his business practices and his networks are also revealed. Interactive elements and media stations provide a deeper insight to individual aspects of the presentation, which is aimed at an interested, but not musically trained audience.
