Birth of the “Eroica” from the Spirit of Dance
Beethoven’s “Eroica” burst the boundaries of its genre. His contemporaries found its sheer length as challenging as its complex web of themes and harmonies. The fact that he originally intended to dedicate the symphony to Napoleon gave the work a mythical nature. What tended to be overlooked is that the main theme of the finale is a melody in the style of the popular “English dance”, a style associated with the democratic ideals of the time. In this light, the combination of the “Eroica” with dance music is not only original but perfectly apt. The same applies for Beethoven’s Third Piano Concerto, whose symphonic characteristics, allowed it to make the leap from the salon to the concert hall.
