Works by Engelbert Humperdinck

Organiser

One hundred years ago, the composer who had set one of the most famous fairy tales of the Romantic era to music died: Engelbert Humperdinck. His opera "Hansel and Gretel" was a great success since its premiere in 1893. The next commission for a fairy tale play came soon: the Siegburger-born composer wrote the incidental music for an art fairy tale entitled "Königskinder". In 1897 this was performed in Munich - as a melodrama, i.e. with recitative. Ten years later, Humperdinck then developed the material into a fully-fledged opera. The protagonists are the same: a goose maiden and a royal son on a royal journey, both in reality royal children; there is also a witch, a minstrel and a lot of (blinded) people. The story ends tragically - with a lot of sound frenzy, but also with simple song. The conductor Michael Hofstetter has decided to give a concert performance of the original melodrama version - from today's perspective the more progressive version.
