Julius Eastman - Right thought, right music.

Beethoven's visions of a society with equality and without prejudice – how would a composer express it today? The vibrant American composer, pianist and singer Julius Eastman, picked up on the ideals of "liberty, equality and fraternity" and took them a musical step further also writing against racism and homophobia.

The humanist and visionary Eastman thereby referred to his composing predecessors.

Eve of the festival

Postponed to spring 2021!

Starts: 8:00 pm

the TRA I TEMPI ensemble invites you to get in the mood with a performance at 8:00 pm on the eve of the Eastman Festival.

We will hear Eastman's explosive socio-political pieces, "Gay Guerilla" and "Joy Boy", as well as music by the non-conformist innovator’s companions from the Lower Manhattan avant-garde scene and underground disco community.

The Cologne/Bonn-based TRA I TEMPI ensemble has been working with the music of Julius Eastman for some years and can look back on a number of performances, including revivals of "colors" and "joy boy", which artistic director Michael Veltman has produced for the ensemble.

Programme:

Gay Guerrilla (1979) for voice, percussion and piano

Joy Boy (1974) for ensemble
