PREMIERE Ludwig van and Enno Poppe
The composer Enno Poppe is quite the daredevil: in his new work he is willing to take on Ludwig van Beethoven's famous Violin Concerto. Both works will be played by the extraordinary violinist Carolin Widmann – marking a major event of the 2019 Beethovenfest. Poppe is a composer who constantly tests and experiments with the boundaries of musical systems, and Carolin Widmann's repertoire extends from the great classical concertos to works written especially for her. She describes Poppe's new violin concerto as “a revolutionary, almost minimalist piece” in which the violin “is made a ‘first among equals’, perhaps more extremely than in any other work in music history”. She will be accompanied by the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra under Alan Gilbert. They will also play another piece whose rhythms and harmonies pointed far into the future: Beethoven's Seventh Symphony.
