Works by Gustav Mahler

The Mahler Chamber Orchestra will perform the closing concert of the 2021 Beethovenfest, and the finale of Gustav Mahler's Second Symphony is inspired by the motto of this year's festival: "Auferstehn, ja auferstehn werden du" (Resurrection, yes, you will rise) is the first line of the Klopstock Ode, which Mahler set to music here. Despite this religiously based certainty of the future, the composition of the symphony was a laborious feat of strength, wrestling with Beethoven's Ninth. Mahler worked on his Second for almost six years. After devastating comments by conductor Hans von Bülow on the first movement of the symphony, Mahler had the brilliant idea for the monumental finale of his "Resurrection Symphony" - a continuation and elevation of the great Beethovenian model - at his funeral celebration of all things. This impulse was not only to save the symphony, but also to encourage Mahler to continue his career as a composer with the utmost consistency.
