Special Concert Celebrating the 200th Birthday of Clara Schumann
It is more difficult to be a woman. In fact, they should always carry around a pistol in their purse like Beethoven's "Leonore". Although accepted as performers, they often do not have it easy as composers. The fact that the brilliant pianist Clara Schumann also had the makings of a composer was proven by the piano concerto that she premiered in 1835 as a 15-year-old with Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy at the Leipzig Gewandhaus. The piece is in A minor, just like the romantic fantastic Piano Concerto of her husband Robert, composed a decade later and premiered with Clara: “... how innovative, how interesting from beginning to end it is, how fresh...,” commented the pianist on her husband’s painstaking work. The 2019 Beethovenfest honours Clara Schumann with the performance of both of the couple’s piano concertos and pays further homage to her anniversary with a contemporary work. The Polish composer Bettina Skrzypczak knows the works and world of the two Schumanns like no other; her music is performed worldwide and by leading international artists. The special mark of this composer? Great emotional power, attention to structural detail and a deliberate dramaturgical form. The concert starts with Beethoven's “Leonore Overture” No. 1.
