" Susan Philipsz. The Calling — A sound installation for the Viktoriabad"
The Scottish artist, Turner Prize winner and participant in documenta 13 (2012) has developed a new sound installation especially for the Viktoriabad, a central Bonn location full of memories. In it, she encounters the silence of the Viktoriabad with the sound of her own voice, which repeatedly leaves space for silent interstices. She was inspired by the thesis of the Italian radio pioneer Guglielmo Marconi that every sound once produced never fades into pure silence, but rather pervades our universe as a silent trace. Like echoes of the past, the artist conjures up traces of the former liveliness and vitality of this place. Sound-wise, she opens up a wide spectrum of variations and thus reflects the whole range of human nature.
The Calling is part of the exhibition Sound and Silence, in which the Kunstmuseum Bonn explores the theme of silence in all its breadth between fulfilled silence and enforced silencing, between apparent soundlessness and sound clusters that transcend the audible.
The exhibition is supported by BTHVN2020 with funds from the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the Media, the State of North Rhine-Westphalia, the City of Bonn and the Rhein-Sieg-Kreis.
