The new Beethoven-Haus
On 17 December 2019 the birthplace of the great composer will shine in new splendour. The museum in the Beethoven House (Beethoven-Haus), which is one of the most visited music museums worldwide, will reopen within the framework of an official ceremony. The “New Beethove-Haus” will then present itself with an additional 340 m² of exhibition space and invite visitors to experience Beethoven in a modern and vivid encounter with a newly designed permanent exhibition. The former chronological-biographical exhibition concept will give way to a more theme-oriented narrative structure. Each of the many landmarked rooms will be dedicated to a theme of its own, which will be presented using the authentic artefacts of the collection. Beethoven’s original manuscripts will be permanently on display in a “treasury”, shedding light on Beethoven’s creative process. The new music room will be the scene of regular concerts on historical keyboard instruments, film screenings and lectures. In addition, the Beethoven-Haus is planning four temporary exhibitions in the museum’s newly created special exhibition area during the course of the Anniversary Year. The series will start in December 2019 with an exhibition titled “In the Best of Company – Joseph Stieler’s Beethoven Portrait and its History”. The probably most famous portrait of Beethoven has not only shaped the composer’s image around the world, but also inspired numerous artists to create further works of art.
