The non bthvn project – Concert 9 and 10/25

KölnMusik has declared the Cologne Philharmonic a Beethoven-free zone with its “non bthvn project”: The commissioned composers have been inspired by the things that Beethoven may never have said...

Organiser

Countless compositions paying tribute to Ludwig van Beethoven during the anniversary year is one way to celebrate the composer’s 250th birthday; but why not go against all expectations and take a different approach? Our starting point is a not so insignificant legacy of the great composer’s everyday life: Ludwig van Beethoven’s conversation books. The first signs of hearing loss that would eventually lead to the composer becoming completely deaf began to appear when Beethoven was in his late twenties. In order to not be entirely cut off from any communication, the composer began compiling conversation books; about 400 are said to have accumulated over the years and they contain mainly the reactions of the people around Beethoven on what the composer had to say. The over 130 conversation books that have been preserved form the basis for the “exchange” of the altogether 25 composers with Beethoven. The compositions were commissioned for the Beethoven Anniversary Year by KölnMusik as part of their non bthvn project. The concert features the pieces “Passage” by Toshio Hosokawa and “This present moment used to be the unimaginable future...” by Christian Mason.
