They were pioneers of their time and shaped cultural life in the Rhineland: Hermann Schaaffhausen and Sibylle Mertens-Schaaffhausen, part of the widely ramified Rhenish bankers’ family who owned the Schaaffhausen Bankhaus in Cologne. Hermann Schaaffhausen is today considered one of the founders of anthropology. His second cousin Sibylle Mertens-Schaaffhausen was one of the most highly educated women of her time. The salon of the Bonn-based Cologne native nicknamed “the Rhine Countess” was famous and attracted contemporaries such as Ferdinand Franz Wallraf, Annette von Droste-Hülshoff and Johanna and Adele Schopenhauer. An evening of theatre at the grand Villa Schaaffhausen brings the memory of the two pioneers back to life.
