(Un)popular Music Theatre: Patriotism on Stage 1789-1815

One of the most momentous musical developments of the French Revolution was the emergence of new patriotic music theatre genres such as the so-called "Faitshistoriques" and production forms such as collaborative compositions both on the part of revolutionary France and its opponents.

Organiser

The conference explores these phenomena, which were extremely popular at the time, but are rarely looked at today. Prominent participants include composers such as Joseph Haydn, Ludwig van Beethoven, Luigi Cherubini and François Joseph Gossec and writers such as Theodor Körner, August von Kotzebue and Beethoven's librettist Friedrich Treitschke. A look will be taken at the artistic reception of these works after the Second World War.

The conference will take place as a cooperative event of the Beethoven-Haus, the Hochschule für Musik und Tanz Köln and the International Cherubini Society e.V. in the Chamber Music Hall of the Hochschule für Musik und Tanz Köln.
