BTHVN2020 | Detmold: Beethoven | Spaces III. Lecture Series

Audienzsaal der Hochschule für Musik Detmold | 32756 Detmold

Beethoven's music plays, shapes, occupies and forms spaces; spaces create and amplify resonances, and are windows to history and the future, shaping communication and interaction. The public lecture series organized by the Musicology Seminar of the Detmold University of Music (Hochschule für Musik Detmold) and the University of Paderborn (Universität Paderborn) uses a cultural-scientific and open-metaphorical concept of “space” as the basis for sounding out such dimensions in both concrete and abstract perspectives.

Julius Eastman - Right thought, right music.

Theater im Ballsaal | 53121 Bonn

Beethoven's visions of a society with equality and without prejudice – how would a composer express it today? The vibrant American composer, pianist and singer Julius Eastman, picked up on the ideals of "liberty, equality and fraternity" and took them a musical step further also writing against racism and homophobia.

The humanist and visionary Eastman thereby referred to his composing predecessors.

Julius Eastman - Right thought, right music.

Theater im Ballsaal | 53121 Bonn

Julius Eastman was a man of many talents, a composer, pianist, singer and dancer, but above all, a non-conformist who liked to walk the fine line and provoke: as a black man in New York’s predominantly white New Music scene, as an openly gay man in a profoundly homophobic society, and as an artist who ventured between a wide variety of musical genres from electronic, minimal and jazz to pop, impro and disco.

The TRA I TEMPI ensemble will play three consecutive concerts presenting a representative sample of Eastman’s compositions. Works such as Crazy Nigger, Gay Guerilla or Colors exemplify his critical socio-political stance.

Concerts at 6:00 pm, 7:30 pm and 10:00 pm
