The BTHVN2020 Database contains all the events that take place within the framework of the anniversary year in Germany. As Beethoven's anniversary year is designed by various actors, ticket sales start individually by each organizer.

The BTHVN2020 events which take place in Nordrhein-Westfalen are subdivided into the following genres: Exhibition, Concert, Concert Format, Festival, Opera, Dance, Theme Week, Drama, Performance, Lecture and Congress. Under the genre 'Side programme' you will find an abundance of events, which additionally take place nationwide in the year 2020.

A Letter and Christ on the Mount of Olives

One of the first major works that Beethoven premiered after realizing that he was going deaf was the oratorio Christ on the Mount of Olives. Manfred Trojahn will compose a prologue to a staged performance of Christ on the Mount of Olives. Titled A Letter, the prologue opens the work with the creative context of doubt and despair, opening up new biographical perspectives on this pivotal period of Beethoven‘s life. Directed by Reinhild Hoffmann.


Beethoven Lab 2020

Beethoven Lab 2020: A festival of contemporary music for the Beethoven Anniversary Year at the Academy of Arts, Berlin. Five concerts, an exhibition, sound installations, musical theatre and lecture performances with musicians and academics from Germany, Greece, Israel, Switzerland and the USA from 12-18 March 2020.

Katholisch-Soziales Institut | 53721 Siegburg

The event will present 10 crossover projects between 6–14 March that deal with Beethoven and humanism. The interdisciplinary reviews also take a scrutinizing look at our time. The artists will be on site during the presentation, allowing visitors to discuss the projects with them. The visitors will determine the winners of the awards with their votes. The awards will be presented at 11:30 am on 15 March 2020 at the Catholic Social Institute (KSI) in Siegburg.

Salvador Dalí and Hans Arp. The Birth of Memory

For the first time, a major exhibition endeavours to show the hitherto unnoticed parallels between the contemporaries Salvador Dalí and Hans Arp. Both artists developed a unique and individual visual language in the Surrealist circle of Paris.

Part of the exhibition is also dedicated to Dalí's fascination with his fellow radical artist Ludwig van Beethoven.

Tony Conrad

The Kölnischer Kunstverein presents the first comprehensive exhibition of Tony Conrad's oeuvre in Germany. The exhibition will also feature the realization of a performance and music series.


Tony Conrad (1940-2016) was an experimental artist and a key figure for media artists such as Tony Oursler and Mike Kelley. As a violinist, he was one of the co-founders of Minimal Music and a pioneer of drone music, together with La Monte Young and John Cale.

The Beethoven Year 2020 starts at the Regensburg Theatre with the world premiere of the opera "Minona" by the Estonian composer Jüri Reinvere, who is already well known in Germany in the field of symphonic music. With "Minona", he introduces himself to the German opera audience for the first time.

On the occasion of Ludwig van Beethoven's 250th birthday, the opera is dedicated to the fate of Minona von Stackelberg. Evidence suggests that she is Beethoven's biological daughter.
