Offering great music to as many people as possible is the key objective of the London Symphony Orchestra and the heart of everything it does. Its commitment to music and the people who love it is rooted in a unique ethos that has evolved over the course of more than a century. The LSO was founded in 1904 by a group of outstanding London musicians. The orchestra is a self-governing music collective based on artistic ownership and partnership. By securing full control over their activities, the founding members were able to draw up a plan that focused entirely on the music. The orchestra still belongs to its members and possesses a very unique sound, which comes from the collective enthusiasm and virtuosity of 95 brilliant musicians from all over the world. Music remains the focus in a concept borne by the orchestra’s dedicated and inspirational leadership.
The LSO has been based at the Barbican Centre in the City of London since it opened in 1982. Every year it performs 70 symphony concerts there, as well as another 70 concerts on international tours. In addition, the LSO annually performs 24 concerts at LSO St Luke’s, as well as 950 workshops and 147 concerts as part of its LSO Discovery education programme. The ensemble promotes new music and regularly commissions pieces from leading British composers, who create important new works for large orchestras and ensembles.

Sir Simon Rattle was born in Liverpool and studied at the Royal Academy of Music. He was the Principal Conductor and Artistic Advisor of the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra from 1980 to 1998, and also took over the post of Music Director in 1990. In 2002 he was appointed Artistic Director and Chief Conductor of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra. He has been the Music Director of the London Symphony Orchestra since the 2017/2018 season. Simon Rattle was knighted in 1994 and appointed Member of the Order of Merit by Queen Elizabeth II in the 2014 New Year Honours.
